There are many hundreds of things to see and do in Edinburgh, for visitors and residents. Here are a selecton of places to visit that we think are unmissable.

Galleries and Museums

Edinburgh has always had a sophisticated and vibrant arts scene. Henry Raeburn established his studio on York Place, and public exhibitions were held here, until the completion of the Royal Institution on the Mound. The Royal Instituition, now the Royal Scottish Academy, and its neighbour, the National Gallery, are still central to art in Edinburgh, with many interesting permanent exhibitions, many of which feature Scottish artists, and the two galleries have recently been joined through a subterranean extension.

The National Galleries complex is set over two campuses, one on the Mound, and the other in Ravelston, just on the top of the crest above the Dean Village. Here, the Dean Gallery and the National Gallery of Modern Art display modern art treasures from around the world, including particular attention to the works of Edinburgh sculptor, Edomondo Paolozzi. The National Gallery of Modern Art is adjacent, and has a fine permanent exhibition, and many activities are put on here.
