Leith was once an independent burgh, and the sixth largest city in Scotland. It has a rich and varied history, due to its historical importance as a deep watered port, and there are traces of prehistoric setttlements at the Shore. To some extent, Leith has resisted the modernification and gentrification of the rest of Edinburgh, and it retains a strong sense of its past.
