The Royal Botanic Gardens started life in Holyrood as the Physic Garden where they were known as St Anne’s Yard.  The garden was later moved to Waverley and then to Leith Walk, but these locations quickly grew too polluted to sustain the plants.  Eventually the gardens were removed to Inverleith, where 14 acres of land had been previously secured for the Experimental Gardens.

The image shows views in the Royal Botanic Garden, and was first published in Edinburgh Old and New by James Grant.
