Mill Lane takes its name and orientation from the mills upstream of Junction Bridge. The buildings to the left were developed by Thomas Gladstones as a school, women's refuge and church (St Thomas, now the Bhat Sikh Temple). On the other (southern) side, the buildings were once part of Leith Hospital, but have been redeveloped as housing.
