The Water of Leith runs to the north of Edinburgh's city, from Colinton through the relative suburbs of Dean Village, Stockbridge and Canonmills, to Inverleith and Bonnington and finally to the sea at Leith. The river is much abated to its former state, due to the tinkering of the millers and the eventual damming of the flow far above the city, to avoid the frequent floods which occurred throughout the recorded period. The river has sometimes been called the Great River of the Water of Leith.
