The Dean Bridge was opened in 1831, having been designed and built by Thomas Telford.  The bridge was paid for by the main developer, John Learmonth, and the Cramond Turnpike Trustees.  Prior to the building of the bridge the primary route north here was at Bell’s Brae Bridge in Dean Village.
