Inverleith Park was laid out in 1890 directly west of the Royal Botanic Gardens on land which had been purchased for the city from Fettes Trust after a campaign by the Cockburn Association to prevent the land being used for tenements. The East Gate was designed by Sydney Mitchell and is dedicated to Alison Dunlop, who wrote a book called Anent Edinburgh. Her brother Charles Dunlop, a city magistrate, is remembered in a monument at the cross point in the centre of the park.
