Stockbridge is named for the wooden or stock bridge (sometime called Stoke Bridge) which used to cross the Water here.  A small wooden bridge, it was used only for pedestrian traffic, and vehicles would cross at the ford, a short distance to the west.    The new bridge was built in 1786 and was enlarged in 1900-01 by the engineer David C Proudfoot.
