Governor John Hunter, The Shore

image copyright Rachel Windsor

This bust of Governor Hunter is on the Shore. Governor Hunter sailed to Australia, where he took up a command position, becoming the second Governor of New South Wales. His governorship, as may have been expected given the uncharted areas and delicate political situation, was a difficult and not wholy commendable thing, and so it is easier to appreciate him for his artistic talents and his valuable sketchbook drawings, containing illustrations of the flora and fauna of New South Wales.
