Canonmills Baptist Church was once a school, which was attended by Robert Louis Stevenson, as commemorated by a plaque on the south east of the building. It has changed considerably since then, with a remodelling in 1906. Since the late 19th century it has belonged to the Dublin Street Baptist Church, serving first as their Youth Centre and, since the demolition of their original church on Dublin Street, as their main church hall.
