Waverley Valley

The Waverley Valley site between the Old Town and the New. Once known as the Nor'Loch, it was once Edinburgh's northern boundary. The Nor'Loch was notorious for its stench, since all the effluence and sewage from the Old Town flowed down the sharp incline you can see in this picture and into the marshy lake beneath. It was drained as part of the development of the New Town and was landscaped, with the two parts being known as East Princes Street Gardens and West Princes Street Gardens.

Nowadays, the valley is consumed by Waverley Station and its surrounding tracks. In the image above you can see the trainline as they leave Waverley Station under the Mound and exiting through the arches, on their way to Haymarket and eventually Glasgow.
