Sheriff Brae is derived from Shirra's Brae, remembering the Reverend Shirra who used to live nearby. St Thomas's Church (now Bhat Sikh Gurdwara ) at the western end was built by John Gladstone, along with the adjacent women's home and school on Mill Lane, who was born nearby on King Street.
