The Scott Monument was designed by George Meikle Kemp, his only building, and was opened in 1828. Unfortunately, the architect died before the completion of his work.
Those with a head for heights can climb to the top of the Monument for panoramic views across Edinburgh.
Sound, sound the clarion, fill the fife!
To all the sensual world proclaim,
One crowded hour of glorious life
Is worth an age without a name.
Sir Walter Scott

The image shows the Scott Monument, and was first published in Edinburgh Old and New by James Grant.
