This street in Leith is named for the Salamander, a ship gifted by the King of France on the marriage of his daughter, Mary de Guise, which was stolen by Hertford’s forces during the attack on Leith   Two houses, known as Frithfield Baths, on this street were used as salt water baths by James Whyte, a local merchant.  The Leith Glasshouse Company were once based here and the north side of the street housed seven glassmaking cones.
