This close is named for the Assembly Rooms, a social venue used for dancing which once was here from 1710 to 1756, when new rooms were found on Bell’s Wynd. Former names for this close include Gillespie’s Close, Burne’s Close and Little’s Close, in honour of residents Clement and William Little.

The image shows Old Assembly Close after the Great Fire of 1824, and was first published in Edinburgh Old and New by James Grant.
