The Mercat, or market, Cross now stands on Parliament Square, but formerly stood opposite Old Fishmarket Close where its position is marked by cobbles. The cross was demolished in 1756, but was restored with a new base platform by William Gladstone in 1885.
The image shows the Mercat Cross of Edinburgh, and was first published in Edinburgh Old and New by James Grant.
