The foundation stone of this church on Commercial Street was laid in May 1839, and was established by the Edinburgh and Leith Seaman’s Friends Society. Formerly on an old ship in the harbour, it was known as Floating Johnnie’s Kirk, the Johnnie in question its minister John Thomson. When the old hulk began to deteriorate, a permanent home was found here at the corner with Dock Street.
