The New Town Hall was built between 1929 and 1932 on the site of Old Leith Manse. It was designed by an English firm, Bradshaw, Gass & Hope of Bolton, Lancashire. It was severely damaged in 1941 by bombing, and was not reopened until 1961, after repair work under taken by the original design firm. The building was used as Leith Theatre.
