Named for Largo in Fife, which was the birthplace of Sir Andrew Wood, who was the commander of the Great Michael, King James IV’s massive warship built at Newhaven Harbour.  Wood had two ships, the Yellow Carvel and the Flower, which were renowned for their speed and resilience.  He was granted the lease of Largo on the condition that he maintained the Yellow Carvel in proper condition for the use of the King at all times, and granted ownership of the land in 1483.
