Kirkgate

Trinity House and South Leith Church are all that remains of the ancient Kirkgate, which was the old centre of Leith. The Kirkgate was demolished in the 1960s, with authorities citing the unsanitary nature and cramped sizes of the buildings. The replacement, however, proved less than satisfactory, and only the Leither's indomitable spirit has seen the area survive the changes to its vital landscape.

The image on the left shows the Kirkgate in Leith.

It was originally published in Edinburgh Old and New by James Grant.
