This seated figure forms part of a monument to William Gladstone, whose grandfather Thomas Gladstones lived and died in Leith. The monument is in Coates Crescent.

William Gladstone was four times Prime Minister of Great Britain in the later years of Queen Victoria's reign. Although the Queen herself never really liked him, Gladstone, a philanthropist and social reformer, was very popular with the people and politicians of the country and came to be known simply as 'The Grand Old Man.'
