Fountain Close

Former names for this close on the Royal Mile include Moubray’s Close, John Barton’s Close, Fullarton’s Close, David Stevenson’s Close, Society Close and Colington’s Close.  It was also once known as Bassendean’s Close, in honour of Thomas Bassendyne who, with Alexander Arbuthnot, printed the first translation of the New Testament here in 1574.
