Donaldson’s Hospital was built to a design by William H Playfair from 1841-1851, funded by the bequest of James Donaldson, a printer and proprietor of the Advertiser newspaper, who lived in Broughton Hall. The Hospital (now College) was founded to provide education for the city's deaf and dumb children, and merged with the Institute for the Education of Deaf and Dumb Children on Henderson Row. Donaldsons have moved their facility to modern purpose built accommodation in Linlithgow and the grand house will be subdivided as residential units.
The image shows Donaldson's Hospital, and was first published in Edinburgh Old and New by James Grant.
