One of Edinburgh's defining aspects, the Cowgate is a deep ravine which runs to the south of the Royal Mile between Dumbiedykes and the Grassmarket. It was once the main route for cattle coming into town, and only lost its prominence when South Bridge and the George IV Bridge were constructed above it. Nowadays, many nightclubs and bars are situated on this street, and it retains some of its underworld charm.
