The late 15th century building is known simply as the Tolbooth, but in fact served only the burgh of Canongate (that section of the Royal Mile east of the Netherbow Port). The western part of the Royal Mile was in Edinburgh, and had its own Tolbooth or jail, long demolished. Its place is marked by the Heart of Midlothian. The Canongate Tolbooth is now home to The People's Story, a community museum.
The image shows the Canongate Tolbooth, and was originally published in Memorials of Edinburgh in the Olden Time by Daniel Wilson.
