Calton Gaol was built to replace the old Tolbooth, and was designed by Archibald Elliott, designer of Broughton Place Church, St Paul's Chapel and Waterloo Place. The picturesque design was mocked by some in its day for its delicate castellations, which many thought were unnecessary for a prison. In due course, Edinburgh moved its prison out of town, since the accommodation on Calton Hill was by no means suitable. The majority of the buildings were later demolished.
The image shows Calton Gaol and was first published in Views in Edinburgh and its Vicinity.
