Broughton Place Church at the foot of Union Street, with its tetrastyle portico, was built in 1785 by the Rose Street Secessionist Church.  It was sometimes called John Brown’s Chapel, after the second minister. It was designed by the architect Archibald Elliott, a prominent Scottish architect in his day.
