This Bhat Sikh Gurdwara is in the old church of St Thomas on Sheriff Brae. The church was gifted to the people of Leith by John Gladstone, son of Thomas Gladstones and father of William Ewart Gladstone and was designed by John Henderson.

According to tradition, Bhat Sikhs are decended from Bhat Rai (the Raja of Bards), one of the original followers of Guru Nanak. Another name for Bhat Sikhs is Sangat.
