Bailie Fyfe’s Close is associated with William Fettes, a grocer and twice Lord Provost of Edinburgh who owned the Comely Bank estate, and on his death bequeathed the land and funds for the construction of a new boy’s school which would become known as Fettes College. Alexander McGlashen once lived here.
