Sir Walter Scott, by Sir Henry Raeburn

Sir Walter Scott, painted by Sir Henry Raeburn

The artists of Edinburgh are linked closely to her architects and writers. Perhaps the most important of Edinburgh artists was Sir Henry Raeburn, who painted the Scottish well-to-do and held art exhibitions at his York Place studio. The Royal Scottish Academy continues to provide a base for artistic endeavour within the town, while newer galleries like the Gallery of Modern Art and the Dean Gallery ensure that the city's taste is kept up to date. The Dean Gallery has a special place in the history of art in Edinburgh, housing as it does the works of the noted sculptor Edmondo Paolozzi.
