This building at 72 Great King Street was once the home of Sir William Allan, who lived here from 1840-1850. Allan was an important figure in 19th century art, his painting influenced by his many travels, and helped to popularise grand history paintings. He was a close associate of Sir Walter Scott, whom he painted, and served as President of the Royal Scottish Academy.
